Types of Shows
 
Fun or companion shows
 
Great for beginners. Often held at local events or fetes. Classes like Best Puppy or Dog the judge would like to take home offer a relaxed way to get used to a show setting.
 
Open shows
 
Competitive but informal kennel club licensed events. Good practice for championship level and ideal for the new exhibitor and young hound learning the ropes.
 
Championship Shows
 
The highest level in the UK show scene. These are judged by breed specialists (or breed all round judges) and Challenge Certificates (CCs) are awarded. Three CC’s (under different judges) are required for a dog to become a UK champion.
 
Preparing to show
 
If you are interested in showing:
 
Talk to your breeder as they will help you to assess your puppys potential and give guidance.
 
Join the Irish Wolfhound Club as we offer show support and may have mentors near you.
 
Attend shows as a spectator and observe how Wolfhounds are handled, groomed and presented.
 
Get your puppy used to noise and being handled as judges will check teeth, muscle tone, coat and movement.
 
Ringcraft classes
 
Ringcraft is essential for anyone interested in showing. These are local training classes where you and your dog can practice:
 
Standing (in stack) – the classic show pose.
 
Moving at the correct pace in the ring.
 
Being examined by a stranger (the judge).
 
Building confidence in a busy, structured environment.
 
Look for sighthound friendly ringcraft classes and attend regularly from the age of 6 months upwards if you are able.
 
Health testing and breeding considerations
 
If you are thinking about showing as a pathway to responsible breeding, remember that the Irish Wolfhounds must meet health and temperament standards before being considered for breeding.
 
Dogs should undergo official health testing, including heart checks (by a cardiologist,) liver shunt screening and assessment of overall conformation.
