Irish Wolfhound breeders are the guardians of the breed. Their responsibility is to breed to the Standard of Excellence in both appearance and temperament.

Bred to hunt, the Wolfhound should remain strong, fit and athletic: a working hound, not an ornament. Its temperament matters every bit as much. As the old sayings have it, the Wolfhound is "gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked", a lion in the chase and a lamb at home.
That balance is not decorative. A dog of this size and power must be sound in mind as well as body, and it falls to responsible breeders to hold that line in every generation.

To support responsible breeding of Irish Wolfhounds that are sound in body, steady in temperament, and true to the breed’s athletic heritage.

This balance of power and gentleness is what makes the Irish Wolfhound truly special - and it’s our responsibility to protect it.
Founded in 1885 by Captain George Augustus Graham, the Irish Wolfhound Club was established to promote the breeding of high-quality Irish Wolfhounds and the preservation of the true breed type. Well over a century later, the Club remains dedicated to upholding these founding principles.
